Meal Planning for Busy Families
Struggling with what to cook every week? Discover a simple weekly meal prep system used by personal chefs to help busy families eat healthier and save time
Have you ever stood in front of the fridge at 6:30 PM wondering: “What are we going to eat tonight?”
Everyone is hungry. The kids are tired. You’re tired.
And suddenly the easiest option becomes ordering takeout again.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
The funny thing is, the more I speak with our customers at Chefpost, and honestly just friends, family, or people I meet when traveling, the more I realize something surprising:
People truly dread meal planning.
And I understand why.
But here’s the funny part: Meal planning has always been second nature to me.
I’ve done it my entire life.
Before Chefpost even existed, I was the friend sharing meal plans, recipes, and cookbook ideas. When my kids were babies, I had separate meal plans for them too. I’ve always loved cookbooks, testing recipes, organizing meals, and figuring out what works best for busy families.
Now that we’ve built Chefpost and helped hundreds of families with at-home meal prep services, it feels like things have come full circle.
But what really surprised me over the years is realizing how many people feel overwhelmed by meal planning.
And honestly, I get it.
It’s not that you don’t want to eat well.
It’s that deciding what to cook every single day can feel exhausting.
Why Meal Planning Actually Makes Life Easier
There’s a simple rule I live by that applies to almost everything in life:
If it’s not on the calendar, it probably won’t happen.
The same applies to food.
When meals are already planned, and ideally prepared, you remove the daily guessing game.
Instead of opening the fridge and trying to improvise dinner, you already know what’s available.
And if you’re trying to eat healthier, stick to a specific nutrition plan, or simply cook more at home, meal planning is the easiest way to stay consistent.
The Meal Prep Structure That Works Best
After thousands of meal prep sessions with Chefpost chefs and customers, we’ve seen what works best.
The goal is simple:
✔ Enough variety throughout the week
✔ No food waste
✔ Meals you can mix and match easily
The structure that works best is 10 dishes for the week (family-style)
Ex.
4 Proteins: These are the base of most meals.
2 Starches: These make meals more filling.
2 Vegetables: Simple vegetables that pair with everything.
1 Breakfast: A quick option for busy mornings.
1 Healthy Snack: Something ready so you avoid ultra-processed snacks.
With this system, you can mix and match meals throughout the week without feeling like you’re eating the same thing every day.

A Healthy, Kid-Friendly Meal Plan Example
To make this practical, here’s an example of a balanced, gluten-free, dairy-free meal prep plan that I planned for my family this week.
Proteins
Greek Chicken Tenders (with side Tzatziki sauce)
Baked dill Salmon
Falafel (with tahini drizzle)
Marinated Grilled shrimp
Starches
Coconut Rice (made with coconut milk)
Pasta with homemade Pesto (pesto shells)
Vegetables
Greek salad
Roasted Veggies (Zucchini, red bell peppers, eggplant)
Breakfast
High Proteins Fluffy pancakes
Snack
Berries Oatmeal Bars
With this setup, you can mix and match meals throughout the week like:
Greek chicken tenders + coconut rice + greek salad
Dill salmon + roasted veggies + tzatziki sauce
Falafel with Greek salad
Grilled shrimp stir-fry and pasta primavera
and so on, you will have simple, balanced, and ready meals all week long.
The Reality of Meal Prep
A full meal prep session like this usually takes about four to five hours to complete.
That includes cooking all the dishes, storing them properly, and cleaning up afterward.
That’s typically the amount of time our chefs spend preparing meals for families during a weekly Chefpost meal prep session.
Of course, you can absolutely do it yourself if you enjoy cooking and have the time.
But many busy families prefer having a chef come in once a week and take care of everything so they can focus on work, family time, or simply relaxing.
If you’d like help, you can book a Chefpost chef to meal prep with your own ingredients (see pricing and details here)
Chefpost chefs currently offer in-home meal prep services in: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, New York, Denver

As a small thank you for being part of this community, I’ll also share a special Substack coupon to our subscribers (use code Substack to get $30 off your first meal prep session). No pressure at all. Just a simple way to see what it feels like to have the meals handled for the week.
Because sometimes the smallest change, like having dinner already prepared, can make life feel a whole lot easier.
